First and the most common, teeth whitening side effects, people experience, are sensitivity to hot and cold fluids and sensitive gums. The teeth can become sensitive if the temperature while bleaching is not kept under control and the pulp of the tooth is damaged. This could also, give rise to the patient's undergoing a root canal. In some cases, where the procedure is not well administered, gum irritation could arise. Prolonged exposure to bleaching agents is capable of damaging the tooth enamel. Carbamide peroxide, the bleaching agent used in the process of whitening can at times expose the dentin, the microscopic particles of the inner tooth. When the dentin comes in contact with cold water leads to an increased sensitivity.

In case of do – it – yourself kits, the tray may not fit your teeth perfectly, this may cause the bleaching gel to ooze out and if it comes in contact with the gums, it could result in extremely sensitive gums. Using these kits too often could even give way to abrasion of the enamel, while ingesting the bleaching gel may cause burning or nausea.

Lastly if you are very keen on going in for teeth whitening, consult you dentist and check with him the various teeth whitening side effects. Choose a procedure that your dentist recommends to be the most safe with minimum side effects.
